In Dragon Age The Veilguard, romances are an important part of the game, allowing you to form deeper connections with certain characters and see many cute, funny, and even sex scenes with them. However, in order to start and grow a romantic relationship, you must fulfill certain conditions.
There are also some rules regarding the possibility of having multiple romances at the same time, increasing your approval rating, etc. We will answer these and other questions in this guide.
How to Start Romances in Dragon Age The Veilguard
Characters Available for Romance
First of all, let's note that you can't start a romance with everyone you meet – you can only do this with companions. It's worth remembering that not all of them will be available to you from the first hours of the game, but fortunately, all companions join you according to the story, so it's impossible to miss them.
At the moment, there are 7 companions in the game, and you can start a love relationship with all of them. Below we will list them and provide links to individual guides on them:
- Harding
- Nev
- Bellara
- Lukanis
- Davrin
- Emmrik
- Taash
Romance Starting Requirements
The Veilguard's romance system is relatively simple. Unlike previous BioWare titles, there are no restrictions based on the protagonist's class, gender, faction, or race. This means you can romance any companion as soon as they join your party – there are no locks for this.
However, there is one small exception, related to Nev and Lucanis. The thing is, after completing the quest “The Veilguard's Best Friend” you will need to choose which city to save – Minrathous or Treviso. Depending on your choice, the development of the romance with one of the above characters will be significantly more difficult, since he will first disappear from your team, and then become embittered. So think carefully before making this decision.
How to develop romantic relationships in The Veilguard
Increase your approval rating
At this point in time, it is not known for sure whether you need to increase the level of relations with companions to turn them into your love interests. Most likely, you do not need to achieve maximum connection at all, but it is still recommended to increase this indicator.
To do this, you can do the following:
- Take the characters you want to have a romance with to complete story and side quests, since after completing them, you will automatically improve your relations with them.
- Choose answers that they support. There are only four degrees of approval: completely approves, approves, disapproves, and completely disapproves. Of course, it is better to avoid the last two. In separate character guides, we have indicated the necessary dialogue options.
Flirt with companions
From time to time, you will have the opportunity to express your love interest to a character. We are talking about the presence of response options with a heart icon in the dialogues. They can appear both during conversations at the Lighthouse and as part of completing quests. Be sure to choose them!
Complete personal companion quests and strengthen relationships
Each companion has their own backstory and their own quest line. Be sure to complete their quests if you want to develop a romance with them to the end, turning one of them into your final favorite. The thing is that it is during or after completing such missions that you can start a dialogue with a final commitment to the character.
During this conversation, you will need to decide whether to end the romance with the companion (don't worry, he won't be offended or leave the team, and you will be able to complete his quest chain) or continue the relationship, making him your only chosen one. However, in this case, romantic interactions with all other party members will be blocked, so approach this issue carefully.
Give gifts
Another great way to show your companion that you are interested in them as a love partner is to give them a certain gift. The corresponding items can be purchased from faction merchants to which your companions belong after completing certain story or personal quests. They usually ask for gold and flawless crystals for them.
Consequences of romances with companions
Let's note right away that this does not affect the gameplay in any way (we talked about the approval rating below), that is, your chosen one will not become stronger and will not receive any exclusive skills if he becomes your love favorite.
The main changes concern the narrative – you will see a lot of additional cutscenes with companions that have a romantic subtext, you will be able to talk to them more, spend the night with your beloved before the final battle, and so on. Plus, the status on the character page in the “Companions” section will change to “In love”.
Other tips for romance in The Veilguard
Can I start a romance with Morrigan
You will meet the legendary sorceress almost at the very beginning of the game. Considering that this heroine was present in the very first part of the series and was available for starting a love relationship, many players had a question about whether it is possible to build a romance with her in the fourth part. To our great regret, you will not be able to do this in The Veilguard.
Is it possible to start a romance with several companions
In short, yes, that is, you can flirt with several characters at once, choosing answers with hearts in dialogues. But, as soon as you declare your commitment to a certain companion during or after his personal quest, all other romances will be immediately blocked for you. Thus, it will be impossible to finish the game by building a harem around yourself!
Is it possible not to have romances with anyone
If you didn't like any of the companions, then you can completely ignore the romance system in The Veilguard. This will not have any impact on gameplay, and you can still get the best ending in the game, where no one dies.
Once again, we note that romances are not tied to the approval rating, meaning you can continue to increase it and even reach the maximum indicator for each of the heroes. And we highly recommend you do this, and here's why:
- Your companions will gain experience and skill points, which will make battles easier for you.
- Completing the entire companion quest chain will give them the “Hero of the Veilguard” status.
- Going to the final stage of the story with weak companions and low approval ratings negatively affects their survivability and can prevent you from reaching the good ending.
- You will be able to unlock legendary armor sets for your companions.
Finally, we will add that companions with whom you never started a romance are very likely to start love relationships with other characters. For example, Nev will get together with Lucanis, and Taash with Harding. You can watch their love interactions at the Lighthouse.
