“For Whom the Bell Tolls” is the sixth story quest Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. After the fight at the wedding in Semin, Ptacek and Henry will end up in the prison cell of Trosky Castle. Unlike Henry, Mr. Jan will face a much harsher punishment. Fortunately, the centurion Tomas is also in the castle, who can confirm Ptacek's noble origins and save him from death.
In our guide, we will tell you how to get to Tomas and save Jan Ptacek from certain death.
Walkthrough of the quest “For Whom the Bell Tolls”
The quest “For Whom the Bell Tolls” will begin after completing the quest “Uninvited Guests at the Wedding”. After a fight at the party, Henry and Ptacek will end up in the prison of Trosky Castle.
No matter what answers you choose in the conversation with Jan, the outcome will be the same – Henry will be pulled out of the dungeon, and Ptacek will be left to await execution.
Earlier, from the dialogue, Henry learned that while they were apart, Ptacek was engaged in wild thievery. Since all wildlife is considered the property of the local ruler, any poaching is punishable by hanging. Now you will have to figure out how to help Jan before the last bell tolls.
Each bell toll will be accompanied by a comment from Henry, and after all 12, Jan will be executed and the game is over.
The only one who can save the lord will be centurion Tomas, whom the heroes met at the very beginning of the game. It is he who can prove that the convicted Ptacek is in fact a nobleman and therefore cannot be executed. However, from the dialogue with the guard, you learn that the wounded Tomas is in a fever, in the chapel of the Maiden Tower and with each passing minute he is only getting worse.
Drag the sacks to the coal shed
Before you try to help Jan, you need to complete a number of tasks to have more freedom in moving around the castle, as well as to acquire the necessary items. Henry's first task will be to drag bags of coal to the barn. The coal barn itself is located in the courtyard of the castle.
After you deliver the third bag, two more markers will appear on your map, in addition to the main one. Now you need to talk to the local blacksmith and ask him about work. You can find Blacksmith Osina near the coal shed.
Talk to him and receive your first task – forge a horseshoe. Upon receiving it, a new area will open up for you, which you can enter openly, without attracting the attention of the guards.
Be careful and don't get into trouble. Since Henry doesn't have the money to buy off the guards and a Speech check doesn't guarantee a successful excuse, being sent to the pillory will end your game.
Forge a Horseshoe for the Blacksmith
Follow the quest marker to the forge. Take the necessary forging items (Peasant Horseshoe Blueprint and Iron Scrap) from the chest on the left and interact with the anvil.
First, place the workpiece on the coals and fan the fire (Q key) until the metal turns white. Next, press R key to move to the anvil itself.
Hit the hammer evenly over the entire surface of the future horseshoe, remembering to turn it over periodically. If you haven't heated the metal enough, you'll have to start over.
After hitting the blank about 40 times, Henry will say that the horseshoe is made. Press the E button to temper the resulting product and finish the job.
Return to Osina and show him the finished peasant horseshoe. In turn, the blacksmith will send you to Kabat the groom, which can be found in the stables down the road.
Give the horseshoe and ask the farmhand about how he used to earn a living. From the dialogue you will learn that Kabat has master keys, without which this quest cannot be completed. However, Henry will not be able to buy them right away due to lack of money.
Continue the conversation with Kabat and find out what You can help him in exchange for thieves' tools. He will tell you about how he lost a turquoise rosary to the local priest Nikodim in a game of dice.. If you manage to return them, the groom will give you some lockpicks for free.
Find Kabat's Rosary
To return Kabat's goods, find Father Nicodemus. He can usually be found in the southwestern part of the castle, where the coal shed is.
Offer the priest to play dice for the rosary. Hinting that the rosary was stolen, Nicodemus will agree to bet them. But due to Indro's lack of money, you won't be able to win back the beads.
The fastest way to get the rosary will steal themfrom the priest. However, act carefully so that Nikodim does not catch you red-handed and report you to the guard.
An alternative way to get master keys
There is also the easiest way to get the master keys needed to complete the quest. To do this, you need to talk to the cook named Fanka, who is waiting for the blacksmith next to the anvil.
Talk to the angry old woman and she will tell you that she has been waiting for a long time for the blacksmith, who promised to unlock her chest of spices.
Return to the blacksmith Osina and tell him about the cook's problem. In response to the blacksmith's indignation, volunteer to unlock the eternally jammed lock yourself.
Osina will not refuse your help and will tell you that he keeps the master keys near the anvil, on the shelf in a red pot.
You are also free to steal the master keys from the pot without talking to the old woman and the blacksmith. Be careful and be careful that no one notices you.
Help Kolda with an axe
Another additional task will be marked on your map – find a job on the gallows. Go out into the courtyard where the coal cart was and run down the road to the castle exit. Find farmhand Kolda at the scaffold, preparing everything for the upcoming execution of Ptacek.
Offer the farmhand some help and he will send you to the barn for an axe that needs to be sharpened. Take the axe from the chest and sit at the whetstone, which is next to the entrance to the barn.
Quickly press the button spacesto rotate the sharpening disk and move the tool with the mouse to evenly sharpen the blade. Sharpen the entire surface by turning the axe at different angles.
After about a minute, Henry will comment on the work done, and you can stop. Now you need to take the axe to Kolda and find out how to get into the Maiden Tower.
Kolda will tell you a story about how one of the farmhands tried to get into the tower through the wellin the courtyard of the castle. Now you have one of the possible clues on how to get into the chapel to Tomasz to complete the main task.
Get to Tomasz
There are several options for how to get to the sick centurion.
Get to the “Maiden” through the well
Use Kolda's hint and enter the tower through the underground passages, going down into the well. The well itself will be in the courtyard of the castle, next to the groom Kabat. However, after jumping to the bottom, Henry will lose a little health and get pretty dirty.
Follow the only passage until you see a door leading to the prison. Go inside and talk to Ptacek, who is in the cell on the left.
He will warn you that the exit is guarded by a guard and will offer to distract him while you hide in the room opposite.
When you hide in the torture chamber, Ptachek will distract the guards. While the guard tries to calm down the loud gentleman, you can leave the prison and go up the stairs leading to the kitchen.
There, surrounded by cooks, you will meet the Chamberlain, who is suffering from a stomach ache. Talk to him and if suddenly you can miraculously pass the Speech Test, he will take you to Tomasz and save you from having to enter the tower in stealth mode. But, most likely, your attempt will fail, and you will have to go further on your own.
Follow the steps up and there, in stealth mode, go further. Climb the stairs, avoiding the attention of the guards. Once you get to the very top, go along the wooden path straight to the white stone tower. Once inside, the quest “Get to Tomasz” will be completed.
However, this is not the easiest way to get into the tower. You can get to the kitchen with the chamberlain without falling into the well.
The stairs leading there will be located right above the well. This way, the chance of being detected by the guards will be lower: when falling into the well, Henry will get dirty and the guards can notice him by smell.
Talk to Jarek
This method will be the easiest, as it makes the path to the “Maiden” completely free. In the courtyard, next to the blacksmith's workshop, you will see a praying soldier named Jarek.
Tell him about the turquoise rosary Kabata, which will eventually turn out to be the property of the centurion Tomasz. In gratitude for the tip, Jarek himself will offer to take youto the centurion, so that you can pray there for his health.
Find out what potion to give to the centurion Tomasz
Talk to Tomas' sister – Adelaand offer to help her. She will complain to you that the fever potion has run out, and the healer is currently away. Adela will send you to the Staritsa Tower for a recipe, straight to the healer's office.
Go back out into the courtyard to the forge and go up to the kitchen by the stairs on the southwest side. Your goal is to get to the very top of the tower. However, at the moment, the only passage will be blocked by a soldier waiting for the cook.
Talk to him and get some food for the poor guy. Run back to the yard and go into the bathhouse, the door to which is right under the kitchen. Take any food and take it to the soldier.
While he is eating, you will have the opportunity to get to the top. Save the game before going further.
Follow the steps up as shown in the screenshots and enter the red door. The room on the right will contain the recipe, along with the necessary ingredients and an alchemy table.
There you will also come face to face with the girl you saved from the bandits at the very beginning of the game. No matter what you say to Katerina, after the conversation she will leave you alone, and you will be able to make a potion for the fever.
Get the potion from fevers
Read the doctor's diary, which is on the shelf to the left of the entrance, to get the necessary recipe. All the necessary herbs are in the chest, locked with a simple lock. This is where the master key will come in handy.
To make the decoction, take the following herbs: tansy, elderberry and ginger.
Interact with the alchemy table and make the medicine, referring to the recipe in the book.
As soon as the broth is ready, run back to “The Maiden” to give to Adela.
This time, you don't have to sneak past the guards. Even if the guards are chasing you, as soon as you enter the chapel, a cutscene will start.
The bell will ring for the last time and Ptacek will be taken to the scaffold. Henry, Adela and Tomas will come to the rescue at the very last moment. However, only Pan Bergov, who returned to the castle in time, will be able to stop the execution.
Task “For Whom the Bell Tolls” will end after you start talking to Bergov, and then the next story quest “Back in the Saddle” will start.
