In God of War Ragnarok, Norn Rune Chests are large golden boxes scattered across the worlds, containing valuable items such as Idunn's apples and blood honey horns. In this guide, we will tell you where to find them and how to solve the puzzles to open these chests.

How to open rune chests in God of War Ragnarok
In thirty Norn chests you can find Idunn apples, which increase the health of the protagonist, and blood honey horns, which increase Kratos' rage bar. The remaining five crates will contain Enchantments and Hacksilver.
Note that in order to open them, you need to solve various riddles, which are of five types, namely:
- Bells: You will need to hit special bells with your ax to make them all ring at the same time.
- Idols: You will need to find and destroy three stone figurines.
- Switches: You will need to find and rotate the three rotating windmills so that all the runes on the chest are displayed at the same time.
- Torches: you will need to find and light three braziers using a specific fire source.
- Totems: You will need to hit all three monuments at the same time to open the chest. This action will not be possible until you have obtained the necessary equipment.
Where to find norn chests in Svartalfheim
Rune Chest 1
- Location: Marshes of Aurwang
- Type: Idols
- Reward: Idunn apple
You can find it during the passage of the story mission “Search for Tyr”. You will need to moor to the shore to unlock the water wheel. Go ahead and freeze the geyser by throwing your axe. Jump over the obstacle and you will notice the right chest on the right.
The B and F runes are located near the chest. The second is on the ledge to his left, and the first is on the island behind the crate, behind the water.
With the rune “R” it will be more difficult. Jump over the water and look to the left to see a large geyser. Throw your ax at its base to freeze it, then climb to the top of the ledge. You will see a stone figure on the left side, at the foot of the tree.
Rune Chest 2
- Location: Marshes of Aurwang

Found in the optional side area right after you lower the wall, opening your way to the north. Keep to the left and you'll soon notice a legendary chest sitting on a raised wooden platform. To get there, swim further and find a small tunnel you can swim into.
Moor the boat to the shore and you'll see a Norn chest on your right among some machinery. You will need to find the windmills and rotate them so that the runes on them match the symbols on the chest: “D-B-N”.
First, look to the right of the Norn chest to find the first switch, hidden behind a geyser. Throw the ax at the geyser to see the windmill. Next, hit it once on the left paddle (or twice on the right paddle) to make it show the “D” sign.
Now go left to the wooden platform to find another switch to your left: hit it once on the right paddle to make a “B” rune appear on it.
Go back to the boat and jump onto the wooden ledge nearby. Look up and to the right to see the windmill: tap the right blade once to get the “N” symbol.
Rune Chest 3
- Location: Dragon Beach
- Type: Idols
- Reward: Idunn apple
It can be found as part of the Quest for Tyr. Having landed on the shore, located on the eastern coast of the Blagodatnaya Bay, go to the very end of the beach to find the right chest. You will need to hit the stone figures that are hidden behind the geysers.
The “I” rune is behind the Norn chest: freeze the geyser to see where the idol is, then throw the ax again, but at the figurine.
Rune “R” is behind the petrified dragon in the southern half of the beach. After freezing the geyser, you will see that the rune is protected by some kind of metal grate, so you will need to go around the statue and hit the figure from behind.
Rune “F” is on the shore: look for a geyser among the large bones near the southern boat dock. As usual, freeze the water stream to see where the idol is, then throw an ax at it.
Rune Chest 4
- Location: Radswinn's Machine
- Type: Torches
- Reward: Idunn's Apple
It can be found as part of the Quest for Tyr. After mooring at the Watchtower, head up and to the left towards the drilling machine. After dealing with the enemies, climb up two ledges and look to the left – you will see a crane, on the opposite side of which there is a chest.
Note: To open this Norn Chest you will need to find and light three Runic Torches using the special ability of the Blades of Chaos (or other sources of fire). To use the skill, hold L2 to aim, then press R2.
Rune “C” is to the left of the chest – you will immediately notice it.
To get to the “R” rune, walk clockwise from the Norn chest in the arena: jump over the gap and you will see two barrels with green plates ahead. Shoot them with Atreus' sonic arrows to open a gap in the wall, behind which is the torch you need.
To find the “N” rune, keep going clockwise around the arena: you'll find it behind a metal grate that will block your Blades of Chaos. To light this torch, stand at the grate and turn around to face the tower – to the right of it you will see a platform that you can grab onto. From here, turn around and throw the Leviathan Ax into the red pot above the torch. It will eventually light up.
Rune Chest 5
- Location: Alberich Island
- Type: Bells
- Reward: Blood Honey Horn
It can be found during the Quest for Tyr. It is located on the starting beach of the island, which will be available for you to explore (technically, this is the shore of the Blagodatnaya Bay, and not the island of Alberich itself). The chest can be seen on the right side after you dock.
To open it, you need to hit three bells so that they ring at the same time. To increase your chances, we advise you to first find all the bells and see what you can do with them: for some you can change positions in advance, thereby speeding up the puzzle.
The “C” rune is located right next to the chest , so it should be hit last.
Rune “R” is opposite the chest, to the left of the large wooden building. It is hidden behind some kind of bars: let Atreus shoot the sound stone on the crane to lower it, thereby opening the bell. He should be hit second.
The “N” rune is to the right of the large wooden building and opposite the norn's chest. It is hidden behind a grate, which can be removed by hitting the left blade of the windmill installed to the left of the bell with an axe. However, soon the grate will lower again. For this reason, we advise you to start with this bell, and then hit all the others.
Rune Chest 6
- Location: Yarnsmead Mines
- Type: Torches
- Reward: Blood Honey Horn
It is quite easy to find it already in the initial zone of the specified location. Crawl through the tunnel, climb out, jump off the two ledges, and then turn right and freeze the water so you can use the capture point and fly over the chasm. The chest will be straight ahead.
R rune is to the left of the chest.
To find the torch with the “C” sign, jump off the ledge to the left of the chest and go around the corner – the brazier you need is located on top of the cliff, not far from the coffin. However, to get to rune “N” you will have to unfreeze the water, which will lead to the extinction of the “C” torch. Therefore, if you haven't activated the “N” symbol yet, then on the way back you will have to freeze the chute again, and only then light the “C” brazier.
To find the “N” rune, look to the left of the “C” symbol – there you will find an abyss through which you can fly over by grabbing a red lamp. If the path is blocked by a large wooden cart, then summon an ax to lift the container and move forward. Crossing over to the other side, you will immediately find a torch.
Rune Chest 7
- Location: Forge
- Type: Totems
- Reward: Blood Honey Horn
You can get to it already during the first exploration of the Forge, however, it will be possible to open it only after starting the story mission “The Smith of Your Destiny” and obtaining special equipment. The chest is located north of where the railroad ends. You'll know you're in the right place when you see the turquoise heart painted on the stone.
Note: This will most likely be your first totem puzzle. They regenerate after being destroyed, so you'll have to use your new gear to mark three of them at once, and then click on the “triangle” to destroy them at the same time.
The totem with the “B” rune is on the cliff to the left of the chest .
The totem with the “I” sign is located on the cliff side behind the chest. Find the three wooden pillars at the edge of the cliff and look east – the monument can be seen on the right.
The totem with the “F” symbol is located on a wooden platform – it is mounted on a rock next to two carts that Kratos detached and discarded when you first passed through the area.
After linking all three totems, press the appropriate button to explode the spears and destroy the monuments at the same time, thus opening the Norn's chest.
Rune Chest 8
- Location: Myrk Tunnels
- Type: Torches
- Reward: Idunn apple
You will be able to get to it during or after completing the quest “The Smith of Your Destiny”. You'll need to crawl through a low-ceilinged passage and go forward a bit – here you'll find a chest.
It requires three braziers to open. The first one is located directly opposite the chest.
The second one can be found to his left. Throw the Leviathan Ax at the nearby barrel, then light the oil with the Rune Arrow to activate the torch.
To find the third brazier, go a little further along the corridor and look to the left – it is hidden behind the boxes.
Chest with runes 9
- Location: Core
- Type: Totems
- Reward: horn blood honey
It is located at the very end of the Core, however, you will not be able to get to it until you complete the story mission “Forge Your Destiny” and get certain equipment.

After dealing with this condition, return to the Core. To do this, go to the Mystic Gate in the bolts of Aurvang, and then take the ferry going northwest to the Sverd Sands. Here you will find a lift leading to the desired area.
When you return, look for a cable that you can now use, thereby creating a short route to the desired location.
Climb down the rope rope and turn left to find a hole that blows air. Use your new tools to climb up the ledge.
Follow the path to the left and climb up another ledge and there will be a Norn chest right in front of you.< /p>
The “N” and “C” runes are located opposite the chest – the totems are on two suspended platforms hanging above the main path below.
If you want to find the “R” symbol, then climb the two ledges to the right of the chest, and then turn around. You will immediately notice the totem at the base of the stone pillar.

How to find the norn chest
After opening the previous chest, start going north through the tunnel. Turning the corner, you will see a high wall with an air hole on the side. Use your new tool to climb up.
Once up, move forward and you'll find a large boulder with a yellow air crack. Throw some new gear at it, then blow it up with the triangle button.
Walk forward and turn right, and then use the capture point to cross the chasm and climb onto the ledge. Go through the tunnel and hit the chain at the end to reach the next room.
Note: If this is your first time visiting this area, then you will have to fight the boss – the troll Miklimunnr. He is not much different from other trolls, however his fire attacks can take a lot of health from you even on a low difficulty level.
From this room, head left through the low-ceilinged tunnel and exit to the opposite side. Next, go through the double doors on the right side.
When you enter the new area, look to the right and look for a hole in the wall that you can crawl through, then go down the corridor.
Once on the other side, turn left and fly across the chasm using the capture point. You will land on a spiral path.
As you descend the spiral path, look to the right to find a gap in the fence with two chains on the sides. Knock off the metal plate if necessary and jump down.
From here, run forward and turn right. Jump over the chasm, slide under the wooden chute (if you haven't walked this route before, you will have to destroy some golden cobblestones by going to the left first and blowing up the red vessel).
On the other side of the chute, use the grapple point on the left side to cross the chasm that emits a blue glow. Then climb to the top of the ledge on the right. Go through the double doors here.
Next look to the left for an air hole next to a ledge you can climb up. Go to the right side of the location and use the new equipment to close the hole. After that, you will be able to jump over the abyss. Once you've done that, you'll see a Norn chest on the right side.
Where to Find Rune Totems
The totem with the “B” rune can be found to the right of the chest. Walk to the right and stand on the edge of the balcony. Find the water chute ahead and freeze it with the Leviathan Axe. This will reveal the location of the monument. Then use the new tool to hit it.
The F totem is in a short corridor to the left of the chest. It stands near the Mystic Gate.
The totem with the “I” symbol is located to the left of the chest. Look for the Yggdrasil rift – there will be golden stones to the right of it. Destroy them with the red vessel. The totem will be standing among the rubble.
Norn Chests in Niflheim
Rune Chest 11
- Location: Wreckage of the Aesir Prison
- Type: Idols
It can only be reached after completing the “Battle of the Worlds” mission. Travel to the Mystic Gate in the Raven Tree. Then go to the tree and you will see a new road going to the left. Use it to get into the Aesir Prison.
The chest itself is located on the second floor (if you count from above), but it will be very difficult to get to it because of the walls. Therefore, first of all, you will need to deal with all the enemies in the tower, and then use the two air holes (you can move them with the chain handles).
As a result, you will get to the lower level, from which we will start explanation for solving the puzzle here. This tier should also be considered a kind of reset point.
Note: Note that we will number the floors in ascending order, that is, the bottom level is the 4th floor, and the top one is 1- j.
So first, look for the idol with the rune “F” set on ice in the central square space of this floor.
Then jump on the east pole to hit with 4 floors to 3rd (you will be jumping from the southeast).
When you've done this, look to the left to the northeast to see a room you can enter. The stone with the “T” symbol will be placed on the right window sill. If you have not opened the gate to this room, then you will have to deal with the dark elf inside.
Next, move to the south corner of the level and look for a window with a blue frame there – climb through it.
When you enter a new room, turn around and look up – there you are find a cracked wall. Hit it with the Blades of Chaos to destroy it. This will allow you to get to the 3rd tier.
After climbing up, look north to find a gate that can be opened with a capture point. Here you will find an idol with the “R” rune and a Norn chest. Destroy the figurine and take the treasure.
Where to find Norn Chests in Alfheim
Rune Chest 12
- Location: Strand
- Type: Torches
- Reward: Apple Idunn
You can find him during the Secret of Groa mission. You can find it almost at the very beginning of the level, shortly after you find the fire and climb through the gap. Once on the other side, go left at the fork and jump off the ledge to find a chest on the right.
The torch with the “C” sign can be found to the left of the chest on top of the cliff. Luckily, the Blades of Chaos are long enough to reach it and then ignite it with the weapon's ability.
The brazier with the N symbol is on the right from the chest and just below the edge of the cliff where the wooden scaffolding is located.
The torch with the rune “R” is located above the place where the “N” brazier is installed, but it will not be possible to reach it with the Blades of Chaos, so you will need to find another vantage point. To do this, return to the fork that led you to the chest, but this time go right and up the ledges.
After climbing, look to the left and jump off the ledge: the R-brazier will be directly below you. After activating it, you can go down again to return to the norn chest.
Rune Chest 13
- Location: Strand

You can find it during the mission “Secret of Groa”, but you will not be able to open it until you complete “Forge of Your Destiny”. Once you've dealt with the light elves for the first time, raise the stone pillar and work your way forward. The chest will be a little further on the right side.
The first rune is to the right of the chest.
To find the second one, you need to go back to the main road – the totem will be placed on the rocks near the tree.
The third symbol stone is located behind a boulder that you can destroy with Daupnir's spear.
Rune Chest 14
- Location: Temple of Light
- Type: Bells
- Reward: blood honey horn
You can find it during the Secret of the Groa mission right after Kratos and Tyr push the two giant statues together to form the Bridge of Light. Ahead on the right there will be a ladder to the next area – the chest is at its base.
The bell with the rune “R” hangs to the left of the chest, and with the symbol “C” – on a tiny balcony above and a little more to the left. Activating them should be no problem.
The main difficulty is related to the “N” bell, which is located in the middle of the corridor, located to the right of the chest, and is covered with sound plates. You will not have time to run and activate it. To solve this problem, stand near the chest and throw the ax at the purple stone – this will give you enough time to turn left and hit the other two bells.
Rune Chest 15
- Location: Dungeon
- Type: Bells
- Reward: Blood Honey Horn
You can find him during or after completing the Secret of Groa mission. On the right side of the Strand Mystic Gate, a passage will appear leading to the Quarries. Walk through it to get to the Plains and get the Secret of the Sands side mission. Start following the new marker to get to the Dungeon.
Go forward until you get into a room with a lot of purple stones and red shoots. Here you will again have to fight off the elves. Go to the end of this room, where there is an exit leading to the chest. However, you won't be able to approach him from here because of the bars, so climb the wall and get out.
Next, you will need to jump over the rocks to open the bars next to the chest and on the platform higher. Thus, you will be able to open access to three bells. The first one, by the way, hangs right in front of the chest.
To get to the second one, open the nearest wooden door – it will hang inside on the left side.
< p>Then go a little further and break the vines, activating the purple stone above them. Use the capture and move to a new location. Then drop down to the area where the third bell is. Don't forget to open the door on the right side so you can activate all three bells at the same time.

You can find him during or after completing the Secret of Groa mission. At the same time, it will be possible to fully explore the desired area only if the side quest “The Secret of the Sands” in the Dungeon is completed. Travel to the northernmost part of the Plains and look for a structure covered with Hive vines.
Go to the western side of the building and use the ax to destroy all the red shoots. Then go to the other side to find a chest. To open it, you need to light three braziers.
The first is located on the left side of the chest, and the second can be found on the roof of the building – to light it, shoot Atreus at the nearest jug of oil.

Rune Chest 17
- Location: Forbidden Sands

You can start looking for it after completing the story mission “Reckoning”, where you can get a new skill that opens a passage to the Forbidden Sands, located northeast of the Plains. You will also need to complete the “Song of the Sands” side quest given immediately upon arrival at the location.
Next, head to the southwestern part of the Forbidden Sands to find a collapsed pillar and a heart painted on a ledge. Go under this collapsed pillar and you'll find a chest of Norns. To open it, you will need to light three braziers.
The first one can be found on the right side of the chest. The other two are on the other side of the column. The second torch is set on a cliff on the left side, and the third one is even higher on a stone arch. You will need to connect runic arrows with each other to light these braziers.
Rune Chest 18
- Location: Forbidden Sands
- Type: Torches
- Reward: Judgment of Alfheim Enchant
To get to it, you will definitely need to complete the secondary mission “Song of the Sands” in order to stop the storm. After completing it, head to the Sanctuary of the Elves, located in the northeastern region of the Forbidden Sands. Approaching the desired building, pay attention to its lower part – there you can break a piece of the wall, thereby opening the passage inside.
Enter and go forward a little to find a chest of norns. Throw the ax at the purple stone located to the left and above the chest to destroy the red Hive vines. Next, you will need to find and light three braziers.
The first torch with a runic symbol can be found on the left, near the flame. Shoot a purple arrow directly into the fire to activate the brazier.
On the right side of the chest and a little lower, you can find a second torch. There will also be a flame near it – use the purple arrow again to set fire to the brazier.
Then look up and you will see vines – they can be briefly removed with a sonic arrow. Behind them, by the way, is the third torch. To activate it, you will need to place the purple arrows between it and the second brazier, and then launch the green and purple arrows into the obstacle and the second torch, respectively. All this must be done as quickly as possible.
Where to find norn chests in Alfheim
Chest with runes 19
- Location: Southern wastelands
- Type: Switches
- Reward: Idunn apple
It can be found during or after completing the “Payback” story mission. It's near the end of the Southern Wastes – you'll find it shortly after the first encounter with the acid-spitting plants. It is located on the right side in an open area, so it is quite difficult to miss it.
The first windmill is located on a ledge on the left side of the chest. Hit its right blade once to get the “C” symbol.
The second switch is to the right of the chest, but it is blocked by a vine. Take the Blades of Chaos and use their ignite skill to destroy the vines. Then hit the windmill's left blade once to activate the “R” rune.
To find the third windmill, go back a little in a southeast direction and climb the wall up. The switch here is also covered in vines. To destroy it, set fire to the blue vine on the left edge of the cliff. Then hit the left paddle of the switch once to get the “N” sign.
Rune Chest 20
- Location: Abandoned Village
- Type: Torches

It can be found during or after completing the “Payback” story mission. At the same time, you can solve the puzzle even before finding the norn chest itself. Following the main path, you will soon reach a broken bridge that you need to cross.
To solve the riddle, you will need to use the nearest crane with a flaming bucket – you have to turn it, thereby setting fire to the blue vines and braziers. The chest itself is located on the right side.
As for the torches, the first one is placed directly below you. Turn the crane so that the bucket is near you, and then start pulling it towards you with the Blades of Chaos. As a result, you will light the brazier.
The second torch is located on the left, so you need to turn the tap in this direction and pull the bucket again. The latter can be found on the other side, opposite the chest. It's fairly easy to get to.
Chest with runes 21
- Location: Ruins on the cliff
- Type: Switches

It will be possible to take up his search only after completing the mission “Payback”. The desired location is located opposite Brock's workshop in the river delta. After getting out of the boat, go forward and go under a small archway. The Norn Chest is a little further on, right above the chasm and to the right of the wraith.
From the chest, move to the left and look for a wall that you can climb. After rising, jump over the columns on the left side, where you can see the chain. Look down now to see the first windmill – hit its right blade once for an “F” rune.
The second switch is located to the right of the chest, on the other side of the rock, which is covered with red shoots – clear them with a combination of runic arrows and Blades of Chaos. Then hit the windmill's right blade once to activate the “R” symbol.
You can see the last windmill right from the shore where Brock's workshop is located. Hit its right blade once for a “D” sign.
Rune Chest 22
- Location: Waterfall of the Goddess

It will be possible to take up his search only after completing the mission “Payback”. The Freya's Worry request can lead you to the right area. When you climb the cliffs, make a couple of jumps to get to the back of the location – there you will find a norn chest.
The first torch can be found on the right side of the chest. Use the stones on the water to connect the rune markers and set fire to the brazier.
Then turn around and climb up the waterfall to the right of your current location. The second torch is at the top – you will need to use the stones protruding from the water to tie the next purple marks.
Turn around again and look for the third torch on the ledge on the rock . Activate the runic markers so that the flame reaches the brazier and sets it on fire.
