In the world of video games, there is a huge community of fans who strive to make their gaming experience more fun and varied, and the Baldur's Gate 3 community is no exception. Modifications are the main tool for achieving such goals. Often, mods can change the game beyond the developers' intent, adding new races, cosmetics, mechanics, and improved graphics and interface. Where and how to install mods for Baldur's Gate 3
There are quite a lot of resources specializing in modifications for various games. We decided to include in the selection only mods from the largest platform in this segment – NexusMods. In addition to excellent moderation and a large number of different mods for games from fans from all over the world, Nexus created their own convenient manager, the installation of which we will discuss below.
Before downloading mods, you need to choose how to install them:
- BG3 Mod Manager is a fan-made manager program that helps install, organize, check compatibility and operation downloaded modifications;
- Vortex is a manager from the creators of NexusMods, which greatly simplifies the process of installing mods for games uploaded to the developers’ website.
Let’s take a closer look at the installation and operating principle of both mod managers.
< h3>Installing and using BG3 Mod Manager
BG3 Mod Manager can be called a more popular option for installing mods – it is mentioned more often, and use does not require registration + does not limit you in choosing sites with mods. It's more complex to use than Vortex, but in return you get more granular control over the customizations you load. Let's look at all the stages of the download in more detail:
Pay attention to the screenshots!
- First of all, go to the >>resource to download BG3 Mod Manager<< and go down the page to theSetup item. By clicking on the text to point 3 [Grab the latest release], you will start the process of downloading the archive with files. Before this, check the availability and relevance of the versions of two system programs: .NET Framework 4.7.2 and .NET 7.0.13 from point 2 (links to download them are attached there);

- After downloading, open the archive with the program → create a folder on your Desktop with a name convenient for you → move all the contents of the archive into it. Then start the manager installation process on your PC by clicking on the BG3ModManager.exe file;
- When BG3MM is installed, run the program and go to Settings → Open Preferences. In the additional window you need to add two paths: to the Data folder and the game launch file bg3.exe (it is stored in the bin folder);
- On the page with the mod you are interested in, click Manual (if the mod contains several installation files or their versions, go to the tab Files → below, select the download target and also click Manual Download). You will be redirected to another page with a choice of installation speed, after which the archive will begin to download;

- Open the downloaded archive and drag its contents (.txt files do not need to be moved) to the Mods folder. The path to it for most players looks like this: C:UsersProfessionalAppDataLocalLarian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3Mods
The AppData folder is often hidden, so make sure to show it when viewing the content [On Windows 10 and 11: View → check the box next to “Hidden elements”].
- When the mods are in the above folder, return to BG3MM and update it using the button Refresh → after loading, drag the mod that appears in the right half of the screen to the left side (under the “Active Mods” column) → then open the context menu from the Files tab and save the changes (Save Order);
- Now you can launch the game and check the operation of the modifications (there is a quick launch key in the manager next to the inscription None).
Not all mods need to be dragged from “Inactive” to “Active” – some work by default and are displayed in the bottom rug of BG3MM. Before installing any modifications, be sure to read the instructions from the authors, in which they indicate all the paths for manually adding files to the game folders.
Installing and using Vortex
Unlike its competitor, Vortex allows you to avoid wandering through Baldur’s Gate 3 folders and manually installing mods – the program itself understands where they need to be placed. An important condition for working with this manager is to have an account on NexusMods. Let's go through the steps of downloading it:
- Login or create an account on the official NexusMods website;

- Go to the very end of any page on the site and click Learn More opposite name of the manager → then click on the download button (second screenshot above) → and in the last window, select the current version of the installation file and click Manual Download (we will attach here the last >>download page<<);

- In the warning window, check for the presence of the required system programs and click Download again → select the download speed and wait for the installation file to download;
< /p>
- After downloading and installing Vortex, open the manager and log in to your NexusMods account (the one you will download from!) by clicking on the red icon in the upper right corner;< /li>
Vortex is in English by default, but you can change the language to Russian (instructions in the second screenshot above).

- In the left navigation, select the Games category → find Baldur's Gate 3 in the list and click “Manage“(check that the path to the game folder is correct or set it manually);
- Open the mod page on the NexusMods website and download it using the Download button (in the header or along the path: Files → Mod Manager Download).
When installing mods, do not close Vortex and do not log out of your account in the manager and on the NexusMods website.
After downloading the mod, it will automatically start loading into Vortex (the file itself will not appear in Downloads). The program analyzes the downloaded materials and determines where to install them and what category they belong to.
Through Vortex you can: monitor the relevance of versions, delete or disable mods, and also change their loading order. Read more details about using the program on the developers' page.
Selection of the best mods for Baldur's Gate 3
We remind you: before downloading modifications, be sure to read the instructions from the author on the main page of the selected one fashion.
Most customizations (especially with new mechanics or gameplay improvements) require optional modifications. Here are just a few of them:

The Tav's Hair Salon and Vessnelle's Hair Collection mods add a large pack of different hairstyles (more options will be available for some races , some – less).
Astralities' Hair Color Supplement adds many unusual hair colors to the game with interesting combinations of shades.

A small selection of mods with which you can replace the male characters Astarion, Gale and Will with their female counterparts. Each character has several appearance options and you need to download only one (keep in mind that with the presence of such mods, the likelihood of catching funny and not so bugs increases).

All Effects And Boost In One brings to the game an impressive pack of colorful visual and enhancing effects that can be used to enchant weapons. After downloading, you will receive two artifacts that can apply and combine effects on any type of attacking ammunition.
Companions AI adds two skills with which you can customize the positioning of squad members and place them under AI control for the duration of the battle (especially good if you downloaded Party Limit Begone and are running around with a bunch of allies).

- Increasing difficulty
Tactician Plus is designed for general strengthening of mobs and is suitable for players who want to add hardcore even to more complex modes, such as “Tactics”.
Lethal AI Enemies will make enemies smarter by reworking the AI that controls them (but the greater effect will only be on high-level enemies, which are strong in themselves).

Transmog Enhanced is a mod for two special alchemical items, with which you can transform the characteristics of one outfit into another (for example, giving powerful stats of unaesthetic armor to a more attractive outfit). Works with all elements of equipment, the main thing is not to transform objects that have different meanings (clothes with weapons, etc.).
