How to start the quest
To do this, you need to go to the entrance to the Ancient Battlefield, located north of Border Town. You can get here by one of two routes to choose from (northern or southern). We recommend choosing the second one, as it is safer, although longer. Both are shown on the map below.
Arriving at the marked point, you will find a male magician fighting off harpies and goblins. Quickly deal with the monsters so that they do not have time to kill Oscar, and then talk to him (if he did not automatically start a conversation with you). Having seen your strength, the traveler will ask you to accompany him to the cenotaph in the ruins – agree to help him to start the mission.
Oscar has disappeared: what to do
Some players complain that the quest giver is theirs simply does not appear in the specified place or disappears when accompanied in case of a long rest, for example, in a camp. If you encounter a similar error, the first thing to do is try restarting the game, loading your last save and going back to where you first met Oscar.
It is possible that this character died from a monster attack. If there is no corpse nearby, then go to the Vermund Funeral Home, located in the capital, and go down to the morgue. Find Oscar's case here and resurrect him using the Awakening Stone.
How to accompany Oscar
Start following the man, dealing with all the monsters along the way. You can spend the night by the fire if you don’t want to wander around the ruins in the dark. Climb the path to the top, and then enter the castle ruins through the open gate on the right side.
If you've been here before and opened the grated door on the right, an NPC will immediately run through it. Otherwise, he will turn left, go up the stairs, walk along the roof of the fortress, and then go down again (the path is quite straight, so we will not show it here).
In the new room, take Oscar to the left and go up the stairs twice, and before the third set of steps, turn into the room on the right. Here you will find a book on a pedestal (under no circumstances take it) Â and a bell. Chat with the man again, and then wait until he rings the bell.
Then the conversation with Oscar will begin again. He will thank you and the quest will end. As a reward, you will receive 3000 experience points, 9 thousand gold and a key from the ancient battlefield. Now you can, with peace of mind, pick up the grimoire “Death of a Nation”, which you will need to complete the tasks “Ordered to Rest”, “Respect for the Sorcerer” and “Pool of Magic”. How to find the missing grimoire
If you already visited this place and took the grimoire or managed to take it before Oscar rang the bell, then you will have a new task related to finding the lost magic volume. If it is still in your inventory, then just chat with the man and give him the book.
But Oscar sometimes refuses to talk to the Risen. In this case, we advise you to restart the game, load the last save and try to chat with the NPC again – there is a high probability that he will accept the book.
If you sold or lost the grimoire, it may appear for sale in the Hardware Shop Ibrahim, located in Border City. By the way, it makes no sense to fake a book in this case, since Oscar will easily reveal the deception.
You can also try to find the second “Death of a Nation”. To do this, enter the Waterfall Cave, located northeast of the Border Outpost. Initially, the passage into it is blocked by the corpse of the griffin, from which you fall at the beginning of the game. Once inside, go up to the second floor and go to the room shown on the map below. As soon as you open the chest with the book, you will be immediately attacked by a lich.
How to use the Key from the Ancient Battlefield
Fortunately, you won't have to go far. Immediately after completing the quest and receiving “Death of a Nation”, turn around and leave the room, then turn left and go down the first set of steps. Next, immediately turn right, break the boxes near the door and open it with the key you received.
Inside the secret room you will find two chests in which are hidden: 2200 gold, a translation stone and a Hellblade – a glaive intended for the Mystic Spearman. It can be considered the best weapon for this class in the first half of the game, if you have not managed to get the Dead Ringer before.
