Life Debt in Genshin Impact: how it works and how to remove it from a character

Life Debt in Genshin Impact is a special combat mechanic that first appeared in Fontaine and is characteristic of members of Fatui. This is a debuff that permanently absorbs the health of the person it is applied to. In this article we will explain in detail how this debuff works.

What is Life Debt

Life Debt (sometimes called Oath of Life) is imposed on the active hero or mob and takes up a certain amount of its HP – you can see this value on the health bar. All healing received by the hero, as well as the corresponding amount of HP, will be absorbed by Debt. If you don't heal the character, the debuff will last for quite a long time.

You can remove Debt using any treatment: hero skills, food or Archon Statue. Interestingly, when switching a hero, Life Debt is retained, but does not take away health. Thus, you can save the hero even at a very low level of health by switching to a healer in time and using his skill.

Who uses Life Debt

Opponents

Of the mobs at the moment, only seneschals (operatives) of Fatui of both types can use this mechanic. The debt they inflict is equal to 16% of their attack power – that is about 9600 HP for a level 90 Wind Operator and 7700 HP for a Frost Operator. In addition to Debt, they impose bleeding, which will constantly take away a small amount of the hero’s HP. Both debuffs can be removed with any treatment. In addition, they can apply Debt several times, and with each new such attack their damage will be greater.

Harlequin became the first playable hero with such mechanics. Consecutively using an elemental skill and a charged attack or ult, she applies a debuff to herself. He gives Harbinger Pyro an infusion and deals additional damage.

Weapons with Life Debt

Life Debt can be part of the passive effect of some weapons.

  • Grand Finale of the Deep. Using the E-Shki imposes a Debt on the hero in the amount of 25% of his maximum HP. When the effect is removed, the character's attack power increases by 2.4–4.8% of the Debt value.
  • Shimmer of Clear Waters. The passive is also activated by an elemental skill, only the Debt is equal to 24% of the max. HP, and removal gives a bonus of 2-4% of all elemental damage.
  • Outlines of the scarlet moon. When a charged strike hits an enemy, it inflicts Life Debt equal to 25% of maximum health. This effect occurs once every 14 seconds. While the owner has Life Debt, the damage they deal increases by 12-28%. If the Life Debt indicator is equal to or higher than 30% of the maximum HP, then the damage dealt increases by 24-56%.

It is highly likely that other future weapons in the game will apply Life Debt, but the exact information will appear only with official announcements.
